Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge sits at the gateway to Hilton Head Island. Nestled between the mainland and HHI, this nature preserve consists of not only Pinckney Island, but also over a dozen other islands.
This combination of rich tidal wetlands and maritime forest provide a relatively untouched home for lots of wildlife.
Visitors by land may access only the main island (Pinckney), where a parking area allows access to nature trails where you can create your own adventure, exploring Pinckney Island by foot or by bicycle on your own.
The remaining islands of the Wildlife Refuge are off limits to humans, at least on the islands themselves. The best way to view these secluded areas is by boat.
Live Oac Outdoor Adventure Company offers boat excursions departing just across the creek from Pinckney on Hilton Head, that explore the waters in and around the Refuge. It's a great adventure "off the beaten path" and sure to hold some spectacular views of wildlife.

Small and mid-sized coastal shark species like Bonnetheads and Atlantic Sharpnose can be found inshore, causing the creeks in search of small bait fish like mullet. Most of these inshore sharks are in the 1 to 4 foot range, and can put up an exciting battle on light tackle in the hands of a young fisherman.
Adults can find it an equally exciting adventure, so if you're looking for things to do in Hilton Head for the whole family, a shark fishing charter is a great bet for a fun adventure.

An amazing thing about Hilton Head is that we have a population of local dolphins all year long. At least 200 or so Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphin call Hilton Head Island home, and they're drawn to the area's perfect features: Relatively warm water year-round, plentiful baitfish and other food, and small protected waterways that are perfect for starting dolphin families.

"Fly" on a Zip Line
Hang on and hang out on a guided zip line adventure with professionally trained guides. This is a truly exhilarating tour through the tree canopy along Hilton Head Island's Broad Creek. Paddle a Kayak
Kayaking is a classic Hilton Head adventure and a great way to enjoy a couple hours on the water. Choose either a kayak rental or a fully guided kayak tour, both a good way to explore the wildlife of the salt marsh ecosystem and an opportunity to see dolphins.
